"What I attempted to do with this project was to juxtapose images and words by giving a group of individuals the opportunity to express on a blackboard----a raw vehicle for reflection and self-examination----as concisely as possible, the essence of their personality and their strategy for dealing with the burden and absurdity of daily life. On a personal level, I have tried to reflect my experience, as I tread along in the dark, and, through the Templum and Ecce Homo series, to examine two themes that are important to me: in the Templum series, I explored the quest for the spiritual and mystical dimension in the world around us; in Ecce Homo, the fundamental inhumanity of man towards man and his tragic irresponsibility, even in relation to his own survival in a marred world of his own making. The horrors evoked in these images are embedded in the collective subconscious, awaiting another opportunity to emerge, as they surely will. “Templum” was the term used in ancient Rome to describe an sacred space circumscribed in the sky by the priest---the augur---to interpret the will of the gods, mainly by studying the flight of the birds, in order to make predictions. In other words, a “templum” was a space where humans, represented by the augurs, could interact with the gods. It represents for me a mystical place where the spirit soars and transcends both matter and appearances." |
